Watermark PDF: Add Text Watermarks to Every Page of Your Document
A watermark is a visible text overlay applied to every page of a document, identifying its status, ownership, or confidentiality level. Unlike a header or footer that sits in a margin, a watermark is typically placed diagonally across the page content — large enough to be clearly visible but transparent enough not to obscure the text beneath it.
How PDF Watermarking Works
The tool embeds the Dancing Script cursive Google Font directly into the PDF and uses pdf-lib to draw the watermark text on every page. The watermark becomes part of the PDF page content — it is not a removable overlay applied by a viewer.
This means the watermark is permanent. Anyone who opens the PDF — in any viewer, on any device — will see the watermark. It cannot be removed by changing PDF readers, disabling JavaScript, or using a different application. The only way to remove it is to edit the PDF content directly, which is difficult and may damage the document.
Customization Options
Text. Enter any watermark text — "CONFIDENTIAL", "DRAFT", "DO NOT COPY", your company name, a website URL, or any custom text.
Font size. Control how large the watermark appears on each page. Larger sizes are more visible but may obscure more of the content beneath.
Opacity. Adjust the transparency of the watermark. Lower opacity makes the watermark subtle and less intrusive; higher opacity makes it more prominent and harder to ignore.
Rotation. Rotate the watermark to any angle. A diagonal rotation (typically -30 to -45 degrees) is the most common choice because it spans more of the page without aligning with the text lines.
Position. Place the watermark at the center, top, bottom, or sides of the page. Center placement is the most common because it covers the maximum page area.
Why Watermark Your PDFs?
Confidentiality marking. Label sensitive documents as "CONFIDENTIAL" or "INTERNAL ONLY" to discourage unauthorized sharing. The watermark makes it clear at a glance that the document is not for public distribution.
Draft and review status. Mark documents as "DRAFT", "FOR REVIEW", or "APPROVED" so recipients immediately know the document's status without reading the content.
Copyright and ownership. Add your name, company name, or copyright notice to assert ownership of the document. This is useful for proposals, reports, and creative work.
Branding. Add a company logo or website URL as a watermark to reinforce brand identity on documents shared with clients or partners.
Best Practices
Keep a copy of the original. The watermark is permanent — it cannot be removed after being applied. Always keep an unwatermarked version of the PDF in case you need to remove or change the watermark later.
Balance opacity with readability. The watermark should be clearly visible but not so opaque that it makes the document text difficult to read. An opacity of 20-40% is typically the sweet spot for text documents.
Choose appropriate text. Use short, clear watermark text. Long phrases may wrap or extend beyond the page edges. Single words or short phrases like "CONFIDENTIAL" or "DRAFT v2" work best.
Test on a sample page first. If you are unsure about the appearance, apply the watermark to a one-page test PDF first to check the font size, opacity, and rotation before processing a large document.
Font and Fallback
The tool uses Dancing Script, a cursive Google Font that is fetched from Google Fonts and embedded directly in the PDF. If the font cannot be loaded — for example, if you are offline — the tool falls back to Helvetica, a standard PDF font that is always available. The cursive style of Dancing Script gives watermarks an elegant, traditional appearance that is distinct from the document's body text.
