Different audio formats serve different purposes. Here is how to choose and convert between them.

Common Audio Formats

  • **MP3**: Most universal. Good compression, plays everywhere. Great for music sharing.
  • **WAV**: Uncompressed, highest quality. Large files. Best for editing.
  • **AAC**: Better than MP3 at same bitrate. Used by Apple.
  • **OGG**: Open format, good compression. Used by Spotify and Firefox.

When to Use Which Format

  • Music sharing: MP3 320kbps
  • Audio editing: WAV
  • Web audio: AAC or OGG
  • Podcasts: MP3 128kbps

Bitrate Guide

  • 320 kbps: near-CD quality (MP3)
  • 192 kbps: good quality, half the size
  • 128 kbps: acceptable for speech
  • 64 kbps: low quality, smallest files
