How Color Filters Work
Each filter operates on the pixel data of an image using a specific mathematical transformation:
Grayscale converts every pixel to a shade of gray based on its luminance — the perceived brightness of the color. The standard formula is: gray = 0.299 × red + 0.587 × green + 0.114 × blue. These weights reflect how the human eye perceives different colors — green appears brighter than red, which appears brighter than blue. The result is a black-and-white image where brightness matches the original.
Sepia applies a warm brown tone reminiscent of vintage photographs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The filter transforms each pixel using a color matrix that shifts reds toward orange-brown, greens toward muted brown, and blues toward dark brown. The result is an image with a nostalgic, archival quality.
Invert reverses every color channel: each value is subtracted from 255. Black (0) becomes white (255), white becomes black, and every color shifts to its complementary color. The result is a "negative" image — dark areas appear light and light areas appear dark, with all colors flipped.
The Intensity Slider
The intensity slider (0-100%) controls how strongly the filter is applied by blending the filtered result with the original image:
- **0%** — no filter, the original image is unchanged.
- **50%** — a 50/50 blend of filtered and original pixels, creating a subtle tint.
- **100%** — the filter is fully applied, with no original color remaining.
This blending capability is powerful for creating subtle effects. A 30% grayscale filter desaturates the image slightly without removing all color. A 40% sepia filter adds a gentle warm tint. A 20% invert filter creates a slightly surreal look without a full negative effect.
When to Use Each Filter
Grayscale is the go-to filter for:
